River Edge is located approximately 7 miles west of New York City and about 15 miles south of Rockland County, NY.  River Edge is bordered by New Milford, Paramus, Oradell, Hackensack, and Teaneck and is on the banks of the Hackensack River.  The Hackensack River runs from New York state and empties in the Newark Bay. The proximity to these communities and others provide ample options for shopping, entertainment, and other amenities throughout the county.

River Edge NJ is a small town located in Bergen County and is a suburb of New York City.  River Edge had its earliest settlement in 1683 when Swedish explorer Cornelius Matthew settled here.  From there is became a valuable stopping point and place of trade for Bergen County.  Since its first settlement River Edge held an important role in American history thanks to the Bridge that Saved America at New Bridge Landing. The bridge allowed General Washington to retreat from a British attack. He encamped at New Bridge Landing and the retreat was pivotal in the defeat of the British in the American Revolution.

In 1894 River Edge was incorporated as Riverside during the time of boroughitis in Bergen County.  This boroughitis resulted in 70 municipalities in the county. In 1930 the town officially changed its name to River Edge based on a referendum held the year prior.

Many residents of River Edge live here because of its proximity to New York City and other major employers in the area.  River Edge’s location makes commuting to New York City easy with both major highways with easy access and multiple public transportation options.  NJ Route 4 runs through River Edge connecting it with the George Washington Bridge at Fort Lee as well as connecting you to other major highways NJ Route 17, the Garden State Parkway, US Route 80 and the NJ Turnpike.  These major highways can get you to anywhere in the northeast and beyond.

Public transportation is another method that is used everyday by River edge residents.  NJ Transit operates bus and train lines through River Edge.  Both River Edge Station and New Bridge Station are in River Edge and offer service along the Pascack valley Line to Secaucus and Hoboken with connections to Manhattan.

The NJ Transit buses run along Kinderkamack Rd as the 165 and 165R bus with service to Grand Central Station in Manhattan.  The buses also service different locations throughout Bergen County.

River Edge’s location also makes it not a far distance from other major cities and attractions.  As stated River Edge is approximately 7 miles from New York City but it is also about a 2 hour drive to Philadelphia and 4 hours to Washington DC.

Recreation is a big part of life in River Edge and there are many options within a short distance.  You can ski as close as Campgaw Mountain in Mahwah or find great resorts in the Poconos or lower New York, which are within a 2 hour drive.  In the summertime the Garden State Parkway is loaded with beachgoers visiting the many beaches along the NJ coast.

Does River Edge Have a Downtown?

River Edge does not have a downtown but many of the businesses and restaurants are located along Kinderkamack Rd. Kinderkamack Rd is a major road that runs from Hackensack all the way to the Rockland County, NY border. In River Edge you have a few areas where shops and restaurants are located. The newest addition would be the development of the old Huffman Koos property that now includes Total Wine & More, CVS, Jersey Mike’s Subs, the Habit Burger, FedEx, European Wax Center, Dunkin’, Hear USA, Sports Clips, the Joint Chiropractic, and Club Pilates.

Up and down Kinderkamack Rd you will find restaurants like the River Edge Diner, Huang’s Kitchen, Green Papaya, and more. This makes this corridor a downtown like area and a great place for River Edge residents to shop local.

This is always a good indicator of a safe and worthwhile community and there are many families who have stayed in the community for generations, myself included:)

Overall River Edge is a very safe community due to the hard work of the River Edge Police Department. Patrols are always visible resulting a low crime rate which typically just includes theft and robbery. The police department is active in the community, meeting with youth organizations and patrolling around the schools to be active members of the community.

But a good community is not just built on long standing families and solid policing. A good place to live has high quality schools, a sense of community, high quality of life, amenities, solid property values, and proximity to shopping, entertainment and other amenities. River Edge passes with flying colors with all of these and is a main reason people are always looking to move to River Edge.

River Edge is home to 5 parks offering a variety of activities from walking trails to athletic fields to picnic areas. Many don’t realize that much of Van Saun County Park is located in River Edge with its zoo, train rides, carousel, hiking trails, and so much more. River Edge residents have easy access to the park and can take advantage of eth amenities and events like Winter Wonderland and the Fall Festival that occur there annually.

River Edge is home to 2 public school districts: River Edge Public School District and the River Dell Regional District. The River Edge schools serve students from Pre Kindergarten to 6th grade at 3 schools Roosevelt Elementary, Cherry Hill Elementary and Newbridge Center. The schools offer a wide variety of services including STEAM, Special Education, Author in residence, talent shows, and many others.

River Dell serves students in both River edge and Oradell from 7th grade to 12th grade at River Dell Middle School and River Dell Regional High School. Both schools are highly regarded as some of the best in the area due to their academic success, class offerings, extracurricular programs, and athletic programs.

Find the Best Place to Live in River Edge

Although River Edge is not a large town you should do some research to decide the best place to live for you. There are no bad places to live in River Edge but there are amenities that you may want to be near depending on your particular situation. Some questions you may want to ask:

  • Do you want to be near schools?
  • Do you want to be near parks, the library, shopping, or restaurants?
  • Do you want to walk to the bus or train?
  • Do you want low maintenance of your home?

These questions will help you decide where in town you want to live. If you are commuting by bus you may want to live near Kinderkamack Rd as that is where the buses run. If you want to be near schools then somewhere along Bogert Rd or adjacent to Roosevelt or Cherry Hill Elementary Schools may suit you. If you want to be walkable to parks, and schools, and the library you may want to consider near the intersection of Continental Ave and Elm Ave.
