Temple Avodat Shalom Mission Statement
Temple Avodat Shalom is a community where individuals and families can worship, study, and assemble within the context of Reform Judaism. We accept and encourage a wide range of ideas, levels of observance and expressions of Judaism.
We provide for the lifelong educational needs of all our congregants, helping to cultivate an appreciation of our heritage and the joys of Judaism. Our educational goals include teaching Jews of all ages a love of God, an understanding of Torah, and identification with Israel.
Our congregation is devoted to acts of loving-kindness (g’milut chasidim) and healing the world (tikkun olam) through our many social action programs within and beyond our Jewish community.
We welcome all who wish to participate, regardless of age, marital status, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or financial means. Straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, people of all abilities, and individuals of all ages are welcome. We are committed to equality between men and women, reaching out to interfaith couples, and a respect for Jewish ritual traditions. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of diverse members, from our children to our seniors. In the spirit of our faith and our founders, we endeavor to provide a warm community and a chain of continuity for all who wish to share our home.
Our purpose is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ in a community welcoming to everyone. We accomplish this through:
Grace has a strong foundation of Christian education and liturgy for both adults and children. Every Sunday worship centers on the Word and Communion. See Worship & Music for more information.
Bible study groups, Sunday School, and additional education opportunities are available for everyone. In addition, Grace has a vibrant Christian-based preschool for children of all faiths and secular camp programs for all children. See Education for more information.
Grace is an integral part of the community and we are dedicated to several outreach ministries. See Social Ministry for more information.
We share many social experiences together as a family and as part of the larger community. See Congregational Life for more information.
We are a congregation of the United Church of Christ made up of members from many different backgrounds. Our worship services include a wide variety of music and liturgy from many traditions. We have a strong Christian Education program , a vibrant music program which includes several vocal and handbell choirs, and sermons which connect our busy, modern lives with the ancient wisdom of the Bible.
Our church members are active in ministry to the community- sheltering the homeless, stocking food pantries, and providing programs for developmentally challenged adults. We support many non-profit organizations, and our building serves as home for numerous groups such as Girl Scout troops, 12-step programs, a Japanese language/culture school, a community nursery and kindergarten enrichment program, a Bag-Pipe band and a children’s theatre program. We also share our space with the River Dell Korean Baptist Church
If you are looking for a faith community which will welcome you, provide you opportunities to serve others, as well as a community which will invite you to join in experiences that will nurture your faith and personal growth, we at First Congregational Church urge you to consider participation in this congregation. We welcome your inquiries, your visits, and your regular fellowship with us in this important work.
